Video transcript: Hi and welcome to Sign Baby Sign.  This week’s word is rock. R-O-C-K (signs letters). Rock is done with your fist hands (“S” palms down). Then just tap on your left hand two times like this (demonstrates sign). Rock (demonstrates sign).

Incase you’re wondering, there are different signs for our list of rocks.  To keep it simple, use the sign “rock” for each of them, after all that is what they are-rocks.

Do You Know the 3 Main Types of Rocks?

The difference between them is all about how they are formed so let’s take a quick look at that.

  1. Sedimentary: formed from particles of sand, shells, pebbles and other fragments of material. Together these particles are called sediment. The sediments accumulates over time and hardens into what we know as a rock. Sedimentary rock is typically fairly soft and can be broken apart easily.
  2. Metamorphic: rocks that are formed under the surface of the earth from the metamorphosis that occurs due to intense heat and pressure. Metamorphic rock often have ribbon like layers and may have shiny crystals on their surface.
  3. Igneous: rocks that are formed when magma cools and hardens. Sometimes magma cools in the earth and other times it erupts onto the surface from volcanoes (called lava). When lava cools quickly no crystals form but the rock looks shiny and glasslike. Sometimes gas bubbles are trapped in the rock during the cooling process, leaving tiny holes in the rock.

Take your child on a rock hunt to see how many different kinds of rocks they can find. Use the characteristics below to match the rock to it’s main class

  • Crystals
  • Fossils
  • Gas bubbles
  • Glassy surface
  • Ribbon like layers
  • Sand or pebbles

Happy Hunting!
