Do You Know the 3 Main Types of Rocks?
- Sedimentary: formed from particles of sand, shells, pebbles and other fragments of material. Together these particles are called sediment. The sediments accumulates over time and hardens into what we know as a rock. Sedimentary rock is typically fairly soft and can be broken apart easily.
- Metamorphic: rocks that are formed under the surface of the earth from the metamorphosis that occurs due to intense heat and pressure. Metamorphic rock often have ribbon like layers and may have shiny crystals on their surface.
- Igneous: rocks that are formed when magma cools and hardens. Sometimes magma cools in the earth and other times it erupts onto the surface from volcanoes (called lava). When lava cools quickly no crystals form but the rock looks shiny and glasslike. Sometimes gas bubbles are trapped in the rock during the cooling process, leaving tiny holes in the rock.
