What is Hanukkah?
Hanukkah (also spelled Chanukah) is a Jewish holiday that lasts for eight nights, usually in November or December. This year, it began at sundown on Sunday, Nov. 28, and ends Monday, Dec. 6.
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the victory of the Maccabees over the larger Syrian army. It also celebrates a miracle that happened during this time, where just a day’s supply of oil allowed the menorah (Hanukkiah or Hanukkah Menorah) in the rededicated Temple in Jerusalem to remain lit for eight days. The most common tradition of Hanukkah is the lighting of a commemorative menorah. Candles are added to the menorah from right to left but lit each night from starting with the left-most candle. As the candles are being lit, Judaic blessings are often chanted before and during the process. Take a moment this holiday to recognize others’ holidays.
