Video transcript: Hi and welcome to Sign Baby Sign. This week’s word is water. This is the sign for water. You’re going to use your “W” hand, take your pointer finger of it and tap it on the side of your mouth two times, “water” (shows sign, turns to side and shows sign again) “water”. If you wanted to drink some water you could just say water (signs water) and then the sign for drink (signs drink). You could also include the sign “want”.  You can see our blog for want to see how it’s done and see other children signing it.  And as a bonus here is our “want”  activity sheet.

If you’re like me, we use water for multiple things daily that we forget just how fortunate we are to have access to it. Just the same, since we use it so often, this is a word we could easily incorporate into our daily learning of a new sign. Just be aware of when you use it and take advantage of the teachable moments throughout your day. Younger children will be challenged in making the “W” hand, so accept what they can do until they gain more skill with that particular hand shape. Remember to continue signing it correctly as they are learning from you.

Did you know there are 7 steps to purifying the water?

Let’s take a look at those:
1. Coagulation- Coagulation removes dirt and other particles suspended in water. Alum and other chemicals are added to water to form tiny sticky particles called “floc” which attract the dirt particles. The combined weight of the dirt and the alum (floc) become heavy enough to sink to the bottom during sedimentation.
2. Sedimentation- Is when the heavy particles (floc) settle to the bottom and the clear water moves to filtration.
3. Filtration- is when the water passes through filters, some made of layers of sand, gravel, and charcoal that help remove even smaller particles.
4. Disinfection- Is when a small amount of chlorine is added or some other disinfection method is used to kill any bacteria or microorganisms that may be in the water.
5. Storage- The last step before water gets to us is storage. Water is placed in a closed tank or reservoir in order for disinfection to take place. The water then flows through pipes to homes and businesses in the community.
