Here are some ideas for preschool students to learn letters and sounds.

1. Letter Sound Activities

Hunt: Hide objects or picture cards around the room that begin with specific letters (e.g., “B” for ball, “C” for cat). Students must find the objects and identify the beginning letter sound.

Sound Cups: Label clear cups with letters and have children sort small objects into cups based on their initial sounds.

2. Alphabet Sensory

Bin: Fill a sensory bin with objects or magnetic letters. Students pull out an item or letter and identify its name and sound.

Letter Tracing: Create textured letters for children to trace with their fingers. Have children make the sound of letters as they trace.

3. Letter Crafts

Focus on a letter of the week and create a craft related to it (e.g., “A” is for alligator, “B” is for butterfly). Students can cut, color, and glue objects related to the letter.

4. Storytime

Letter Focus: Read books that emphasize specific letters or sounds.

Story Stones: Paint or draw letter sound images on small rocks to create story stones. Children can then use these stones to create and tell their own stories.

5. Initial Sound Jump

Place letters on the floor and call out words that begin with those letters. After hearing the word, students jump to the correct letter.

6. Matching

Picture Match: Create a matching game with letters or words and their corresponding pictures.

Harvest Vocabulary Word Wall: Create a word wall featuring fall and Thanksgiving vocabulary (e.g., “harvest,” “corn,” “family”). Use pictures alongside words for visual support. Encourage children to identify the beginning sounds and add new words as they learn them.

Word Building: Practice building 2-4 letter words.

These activities can supplement your literacy and give your preschoolers more opportunities to learn about letters and sounds while exploring the fall season and Thanksgiving.

Sign Language Component:

  • ⭐️ Teach the ASL signs for each letter and corresponding object.
  • ⭐️ Introduce signs for each vocabulary word on the wall, encouraging children to use the signs when discussing the words or during related activities.
  • ⭐️ Teach children the signs for key vocabulary words related to Thanksgiving (e.g., “thankful,” “turkey,” “harvest.”)
