1. Red Scavenger Hunt

Hide objects around the room or area. Students can search for them and discuss shades of red (light and dark).

Sign Language Component:

  • ⭐Teach the sign for “red.”

2. Salt Painting with Red

Take paper and write the sight words in glue. Cover the glue with salt and shake off access. Have students do this or create it beforehand. Have preschoolers drop red-colored water onto the words using a pipette or paintbrush and watch as it changes.

Sign Language Component:

  • ⭐ Teach the sign for “red,’ and red world-related items (“strawberry,” “cherry, “ and “rose.”)
  • ⭐ Teach the signs for “glue,” “salt,” “colored water,” “pipette,” or “paintbrush.”

3. Dramatic Play

Create a red-themed dramatic play area with red fabric, stuffed animals like red Santa, and play food. Encourage preschoolers to use their imagination and sign “red” as they play.

Sign Language Component:

  • ⭐Introduce the signs for red items and stuffed animals’ names in the dramatic play area.

4. Sing Songs about Red

Sing silly songs that mention the color red, like “If Your Clothe Any Red” (use tune from If You’re Happy and You Know It.) or r-e-d (to tune of Bingo) or red (with tune from Row Row Row Your Boat.)

Sign Language Component:

  • ⭐ Sign red (letters if doing Bingo theme song) as you sing.
  • ⭐ Introduce other signs for words you use in the songs, like “rose,” “heart,” etc.

Incorporating sign language into these activities creates a richer learning experience for all students, promoting color recognition, creativity, communication, and inclusion.
